Glass Furniture
What's been done
I was chosen by the Henry Arts Program to take part in their inaugural Artist Residency. In this program I would create a series of glass tables and glassware.
Project Context
Staying in the rural American town, I sought a principle which would guide the creation of a bespoke furniture set. The flat, heavy sky became the central theme of the pieces.
Heavy Glass Concept
I became increasingly interested in producing designs in glass as I saw it as a way to explore a completely foreign material as an industrial designer. In central Illinois is a family owned glassblowing business: Obrien’s Scientific Glass. The shop specializes in professional chemical testing equipment for corporate and university laboratories.
The shop has a futuristic, but rough science lab appeal, and I knew the craftsmen here could capture my idea: that the heavy, flat horizon of the glass top would force structure into the pieces, so joinery would become unnecessary. I wanted to produce the same test tube precision in an object that would play with physics, and make people ask: “How does that work? A set of glassware would accompany each larger furniture piece.
Due to NDA, only a strict selection of product studies are available to view.
